Kylie Williams has a marketing agency background and divides her time between being a self-employed Communications & Marketing Consultant and the entrepreneur behind a gift registry startup GVLOV. We asked Kylie for some strategies to help shift the mindset around hiring remotely.

Mitigating Risk:

The trick I use to hire remotely with confidence is to start small and build a relationship with a remote employee before assigning them business-critical tasks. Hiring remotely is undoubtedly riskier than employing locally. It’s harder to verify a remote hire’s credentials, as well as question them if work is not completed to standard or on time. This ‘start small’ method allows you to assign low risk tasks to a variety of remote hires and grow the complexity and deadline demands until you have a pool of talented and reliable hires.

When Benefits Outweigh Risk:

When you have patiently vetted a remote employee and built a trusting relationship, the benefits of having an employee working while you sleep can far outweigh the risks of hiring remotely. The ability to brief work in the afternoon and wake up to a completed task in your inbox, ready for proofing, is invaluable – and a lot of fun!

Bottom Line:

With a patient vetting process that involves starting with non-critical tasks, it’s possible to curate a pool of talented, reliable employees. This approach mitigates the risks of hiring remotely and lets you enjoy the benefits of talented, reliable employees that work from anywhere!
